The 2005 ESL International Air Show was held the weekend of June 10-12, 2005. Airport Firefighters remained busy throughout the show performing various duties around the show area. In additon to protecting the airport, which remained open throughout the weekend, there were also dozens of visiting aircraft and thousands of air show guests. Some of the duties performed by the Firefighters included inspections of all vendor areas, fire protection at generator 'hot' refuels, filling the water pit used by the Navy Seabees for their Kiddie Komando course, and also ensuring several barrels used for misters throughout the show area remained full to help keep the crowd cool. Firefighters also provided EMS in the crowd area with Monroe Ambulance.
Outside of the crowd area, crash trucks were staged around the airfield with 2-3 man crews to provide maximum coverage for any incident that may occur. There was a crew staged at the airport terminal to protect not only the terminal, but also the parking garage, Fairfield Inn, and roadways in front of the airport as well. In the firehouse, two crash trucks were manned, and a driver was provided for Rescue 8, along with a representative from the Monroe County HAZMAT Team.
After a mostly hot and humid weekend, Airport Firefighters had responded to approximately 30 mostly heat related EMS calls, a small fuel leak from one of the show aircraft, and an Alert 1 on an F-15. The pilot reported a braking problem while landing after his demonstration flight. The aircraft landed safely and was towed back to it's air show parking area.
